Heather vs Melinda

Why do you think the narrator made Heather and Melinda friends? Compare and contrast these characters.

  1. I feel that Melinda and Heather are very different. Heather wants to make friends and fit in, while Melinda just wants to be invisible. I also think, though, that they are similar because they are both in need of a friend.

  2. I think the narrator paired up Heather and Melinda as friends because they are so different. Melinda is determined to fly under the radar and avoid any sort of social outings. Heather, on the other hand, is constantly wanting to be involved in any sort of social event, school outing, or club. I think the two of them are good for each other, though. Their personalities sort of give them a chance to get to know each other a gain a friend.

  3. I think that Heather and Melinda become friends because they are both pretty desperate. Plus, Heather can talk a lot, and Melinda "listens" well. After a while, Heather realizes that they have nothing in common, which can really tear a friendship apart.

  4. Heather and Melinda basically come from different stratospheres. Melinda is a bit depressed, and Heather is Miss. Bubbly. The author made them friends in order to further characterize Melinda's depressed attitude by juxtaposition.

  5. The author probably made Heather and Melinda friends to show how different and unusual Melinda really is. While Heather is a happy teenage girl who wants to make friends and fit in, Melinda hates life and is just trying to skate by without being noticed. The differences between Heather and Melinda are used to show how scarred Melinda is.

  6. I agree with everyone's comments; however, I think the main reason for them to be friends is because the author wants to tell the reader that everyone can have friends; no matter how different you are.
